Happy Birthday, Alston

Alston woke up, bright and early at 6 am this morning. His daddy jumped out of bed at the first sound of him, and opened his bedroom door with a big “Happy Birthday!” I listened over the monitor as he changed his diaper and told him it was his very first birthday. One year ago today, at 1:33 am, Price Alston Scott was welcomed to the world, and his Daddy was the first person to hold him. Lets rewind…
I woke up bright and early to the sound of men working in our addition. I waddled downstairs in my pjs, waved a little hello, grabbed the whole box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch and a bowl already full, and waddled back upstairs. After my usual two bowls of cereal, I snuggled back up in the covers and snoozed the rest of the morning away. I wasn’t due for 5 more days, had been having contractions for about 2 days and I was huge and somewhat miserable. When I awoke, it was as if Santa had come. My addition had beautiful new carpet and it actually looked like a living room. I was full into nesting mode and ready to clean, so I broke out the vacuum cleaner and vacuumed and cleaned windows and scrubbed and scrubbed. When Patrick came home, I put him to work, too. Moving furniture and rearranging until it was exactly how we wanted it. Then my mom came over, then my dad showed up. Everyone was busy, busy. Everything that was waiting to go in the living room had been sitting in Alston’s room, so after we moved everything out, my mom started cleaning his room. Vacuuming under the bed just wasn’t possible for me at that point. She also scrubbed my bathroom floor, which I desperately wanted to do, but couldn’t. (cont’d…)
